Open a new workbook in Microsoft Excel. What is the name of your new document right now? Book 1
Save your workbook on your home drive. What did you name it? excelproject
Down at the bottom of the workbook are 3 tabs named Sheet 1, Sheet 2, Sheet 3. Delete Sheets 2 and 3. Rename Sheet 1: Water Temp Data.
Move your cursor to cell A1. How do you know it’s A1? The A and the 1 are highlighted.
Here is the problem you will enter data for and chart:
A clam farmer has been keeping records concerning the water temperature and the number of clams developing from fertilized eggs. The data is provided below:
In A1, type the following title: Water Temperature in °C
In B1, type the following title: Number of Developing Clams
Format the titles so that they are font size 12 and BOLD. What happens to the text? It becomes size 12 and bold.
Make an adjustment to the columns to make the text fit. How did you do it? Clicked and dragged the end of the column.
Enter the following numbers in column A, beginning in cell A2:
15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50
Enter the following numbers in column B, beginning in cell B2:
75, 90, 120, 140, 75, 40, 15, 0
Make sure NOT to label the numbers when you enter them into the cells. Why? It well mess up the graph
Center the data in both columns.
Highlight all the data and the titles you have entered. How can you tell it’s highlighted? Because it is blue and the rest is white. Where is the beginning of the highlight? At the top of my data. How do you know? Because I looked at it.
Create a Chart using the Chart Wizard:
The Chart Wizard is included in Excel to help you choose the type of chart you want to make and let you specify chart options.
You could also use the Insert menu and select Chart.
The first box of the Chart Wizard asks you to choose a Chart Type and Sub-Type. You need a line graph, but NOT the line graph in the list. Do you know why? No
Choose XY (Scatter) and choose one to the sub-types with lines. Note the XY. What should that remind you of? a coordinate plane
Click Next.
The second box of the Chart Wizard is looking for the data range. You can make the box smaller by clicking on the button on the far right of the data range box. The data range will become a small box at the top of the screen and you’ll be able to select the cells you want to include in the data range. Once you submit the data range, you return to the Chart Wizard and the source data box will appear. *Use this if you forgot to highlight the range of data to be charted. If you selected your data as instructed, this box shows a preview of the chart with data range you have selected.
Click Next
The third box of the Chart Wizard asks you to specify the chart options. Click on the tabs across the top of the box to change options. For example: to change the options for the Legend. Click the legend tab The fourth box allows you to place the chart either in the data excel worksheet or on a new sheet. Most of the time you will select a new sheet. Click on the Finish button to create the chartFrom looking at the chart:
What is the dependent variable? How do you know? The number of developing clams
What is the independent variable? How do you know? The water temperature
What is the optimum temperature for clam development? 30 degrees Celsius.
How does this chart compare with the one you drew by hand? It is more precise and accuarate.
